Restoring VM to new host

I am doing a big job this weekend and will be using Veeam 6 to restore a VM that was on a host running ESX 3.5U5 to a new host running Vsphere 5U1. Once I have restored the VM, is it wise to update the virtual hardware before I power it up? Once the virtual hardware is updated, then power up and update the VM tools?

Thanks

no.. I would not update the virtual hardware until you have confirmed the VM came back online ok.  From there, you'll need to update the VMware tools first, then you can power off the guest and upgrade the virtual hardware.  With that said, if you upgrade the virtual hardware that VM can no longer run on a VI3 Host.

Ok so, power up once restore is done, confirm VM is healthy, update vmware tools, power off. Update virtual hardware.

I understand once the virtual hardware has been udpated the vm can no longer run on a 3.x host, that is not a concern as it is being replaced by a new host running VSphere 5.

Thanks

yes, that is the steps to take.
