  • 1.  Restore VM Shell for Windows Restore?

    Host: ESXi 8.2
    Management: vCenter 8

I'm using Windows System Image Backup on Win10 VM machines to backup to a NAS.  When it comes time to restore, as long as I can boot from installation media, I can restore the OS.  But in the case of catastrophic failure on the host, how do I backup ESXi so that it can restore the VM configurations with empty hard drives?

    Hi,

You cannot backup ESXi, create another VM with new hard disks.

Another option is to use a backup tool that is able to back up the VM images themselves. A fairly popular option that begins with the letter "V" has a community edition that has VM limits but is pretty good.

    Kind regards.

There are ways to backup the system configuration of the ESXi host as noted in this KB:

How to back up and restore the ESXi host configuration (2042141) (vmware.com)

However, if you are looking for a way to say perform an "image-level" backup of the ESXi server, that does not exist.
