Resource Allocation Memory Total Capacity report seems incorrect

Hello

I am fairly new to vmware though I have used esxi 3.5 a few times.

I am planing/testing VMWare consolodation and have install esxi 4.0 build 244038 on a HP G6 dl360 with 12 GB of ram.

I have not installed any vm's or changed anything from the default install.

When i look at the sumary tab i see memory usuage 879MB which is more than i expected but it is still acceptable.

When i look at the Configuration Tab under memory i see total 12275.6 MB System 1107.6 virtual machines 11168MB which is strange since those numbers dont match the summary usage but i suppose the extra 250Mb or ram is reserved for the system.

But when i look at resourse allocation it shows Total Capacity 9806MB So can someone explain whats really going on here..

I thought that vmware was supposed to be the smallest footprint most powerful hypervisor out there but looking at this it is taking 2.5GB to run just the hypervisor by itself.

some of the existing VM's we have are running on Hyper-V 2008 R2 and that hypervisor and parent partiion (aka Full gui management OS) only uses about 1.5GB i was hoping/expecting less overhead with VMWare not more.

Is their something I need to change from the default install to get back?

I had expected 768 of RAM or less to be used by the Hypervisor.
