Rename Network Device Alias in ESXi 6.5

RE: KBA 2091560, is it possible to rename a network device alias to any string, or must it follow the convention "vmnicN" where only N can be modified for (re)enumeration? Basically, can I rename my physical adapters to something more meaningful other than "vmnic"?

As this is not mentioned in any document, I think that this is not possible and you should rename them to vmnicN and other name is not identifiable for hypervisor.
