Removable drive bay for vmdk backups

Free ESXi 5.1, GA-Z77-UD3H, I5-3570k, 512GB SSD, 8 VM's

I don't think this would be an issue but I want to be sure before I buy the bay and drive. I want to install a removable bay and have a backup drive to back up my vmdk files. I would only have the drive 'in' for the backups so I realize I would need to reboot the host twice (once to connect the drive and once to remove). Other than that are there any other problems with this plan? I'm currently backing up across the network and, although I love my 5505 ASA, the 100Mb connection speed is killing me!

TIA!

Edit - The drives would be connected directly to the Z77 chipset - no RAID controller
