Reduce Disk Size on VM

We just got our environment up and running and had a 3rd party do the implementation and the first server build. They gave the VM a 100 GB drive, but it only needs to be 10 GB. Is there a way to reduce it or do I have to recreate it? In the VCenter, I clicked on Edit Settings under the server and changed the Virtual Disk size, but it didn't update. Do I need to shutdown the VM to make the change? We're on ESXi 4.1.

Thanks.

The most straight forward way to reduce the size of the virtual disk is to use the VMware Converter and do a V2V. The Converter will allow you to select the desired size of the target disk (depending on the guest OS) in step 3 if you select volume based conversion.

Is that in the vSphere Client? Sorry, I'm just learning this.

No need to apologize. You can download the VMware Converter at http://www.vmware.com/go/download-converter
