Recover missing files from a corrupt Ubuntu VM?

I have a Ubuntu VM that can no longer start because of some sort of corruption. GRUB is unable to boot fully. Using some file recovery tools, I've looked at the files that still exist in the VM, but even that has missing files.

Is it possible to take the corrupted VM and run a disk recovery that one would do on a physical machine? My thought is that the journaling might still have some remnants of the files I'm missing.

Is there some where to take the corrupted VM and mount it onto a physical drive and run recovery on that drive like it were a physical machine?

Thanks for your time. Any help is greatly appreciated.

how about booting from an ubuntu ISO -- and then run fsck on the discovered disk?
