No, this is not a good idea, unless you're installing for learning purposes.

If is is, what are the advantages or disadvantages of installing esxi on workstation rather than booting the machine the the installation cd?

For production server, vSphere ESXi should run on top of physical machine, but remember that physical hardware must be on HCL.
