Don't know if the right place to put this.
I have a Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS realease 4 (Nahant Update 😎 that I virtualized using VMware Converter, to ESXi 5.1
The RHEL will not recognize more than 8 CPUs, no matter how I configure the VM settings.
Any limits on the RHEL version I have? Or am I missing something?

It seems, according to that matrix, that version 4 supports 64 logical CPUs, So RHEL shouldn't be the problem.

That's telling a way to specify cores per socket in ESX 4.x, in that version there was no drop down for cores per socket.
I have already tried every combination possible of virtual sockets and cores per socket. Still no result.

How many physical and logical threads does your physical host have?
Please paste your /proc/cpuinfo of the VM.
It might be that RHEL4 has problems with NUMA, as the ESXi host presents a vNUMA environment to the guest once you exceed 8 vCPUs. Check if your guest OS sees a NUMA architecture in both cases:

There should be a parameter to disable vNUMA, or you can just enable CPU hot-add, which will automatically disable vNUMA:

maybe your virtual have hardware version 7 where maximum number of vCPU is 8.
Try upgrade on higher version.
