1. First you need to download ESXi(hypervisor) and install on your server.

:Refer:vSphere 5.5 - How to install and configure VMware ESXi 5.5 - YouTube

2. Once ESXi installation is successful, you can create VM and then install windows 2012 R2 in that VM as GOS.

Hello VickyVision2020.   We will use our Dell T420 server as a dedicated "Sandbox", and it is not allowed to connect to corporate LANs.  I have a question that first, I will install VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5.5 (free version), then next I download VMware vSphere Client 5.5 and install to the same server Dell T420 to create VMs in this server, is this correct?   Thank you very much for your help.

The vSphere Client will only run on a Windows system, and cannot be installed directly on an ESXi host. Anyway, what do you need to run in the "Sandbox"? Is it the Hypervisor (ESXi) itself, or do you want to create a "Sandbox" for the virtual machines you are going to install?

Hello Andre.   My company bought this server DELL T420 for our development team to use as physical sandbox. The company network group doesn't allow to hookup this server to network LAN.   Therefore, we use our wireless adaptor card to communicate to our separate WIFI to get through internet.   In addition, we connect our development laptops to this physical sandbox by cable hardwire.  If I install VM vsphere hypervisor 5.5 to this server whether do I need to install any base OS in physical sandbox before install vsphere hypervisor 5.5.  In addition, can I use vsphere hypervisor 5.5 to create VMs in this physical sandbox or I need to install vsphere client 5.5 in development laptop to connect to this physical sandbox?  Thank you very much for your tip.

The vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) is the operating system, and it's installed directly on the hardware. To manage the Hypervisor - i.e. to setup virtual networks, create VMs, ... - you need to connect to the Hypervisor from a Windows system with the vSphere Client installed.

Just in case your networking team is not familiar with ESXi (or virtualization in general). You can completely separate the management network from the virtual machine's network, and this way manage the ESXi host from e.g. the secure company network, but have the VM's on a completely different network.

Hello Andre,

Thank you very much for your help.   I need to create at least 4 virtual machines, VMS, to install SQL server 2012 in one VM, SharePoint 2013 in different VM, TFS 2013 still in different VM, and BizTalk server in the last VM, total are 4 VMs.  I have a question that first step, I need to install vsphere Hypervisor ESXi  5.5 to my physical sandbox, then I will install vsphere Client ESXi 5.5 to another laptop running on Windows 7 to connect to my physical sandbox to create 4 VMs as above, is this correct?  In addition, do I need to install vsphere Client 5.5 to each laptop to connect to physical sandbox?  Will you please correct my steps as below if it is wrong.

1) Install VMware vsphere Hypervisor ESXi 5.5 to my physical sandbox

2) Install VMware vsphere Client ESXi 5.5 to laptop running on Windows 7 or windows 8

3)  Use laptop having vsphere Client ESXi 5.5 to connect to my physical sandbox (host) having vsphere Hypervisor ESXi 5.5 to create 4 VMs as description above?

4) Install OS to 4 VMs  by using VMware Hypervisor ESXi 5.5

5) Install all vsphere Client ESXi 5.5 to all laptops which will be coneected to physical sandbox.

I am still not sure after to create VM, whether I will use vsphere hypervisor ESXi 5.5 to access to VM to install OS or I will use vsphere Client ESXi 5.5 to access to VM in physical sandbox to install OS, SQL server, TFS, and BizTalk?

Thank in advance for your correction and your help.

Peter

The vSphere Client is required to create a virtual machine on the Hypervisor (ESXi) and to at least install the operating system. Subsequent application installations can either be done using the vSphere Client (to access the VM's console), or by connecting to the Windows guest OSs via RDP.
