Question on ESXi 5 upgrade

Situation:

- Planned to upgrade ESX 4.0 to ESXi 5.1 (with fresh install)

- In vCenter [ hkdatacenter (datacenter) >>> hkvmcluster (cluster) >>> hkvm1, hkvm2, hkvm3, hkvm4 (4 hosts) >>> VM clients ]

- hkvm1-4 are ESX 4.0 and hkvm1 has planed to upgrade ESXi 5.1

- same IP and hostname will be used

- all VM has been vmotion to other hosts

- hkvm1 has 2 datastores (hkvm1_local_data & hkvm1_local_OS)

Qustions:

- do I need to remove current hkvm1 then add back after fresh install ?? or just frsh install, vCenter will detect automatically ??

- if need to remove, what should I do before ??

- currently hkvm1 has 2 datastores, will fresh install remove all data even in hkvm1_local_data ??

Thanks

Hi,

Before I could answer your questions, are you running the ESXi hypervisor with an USB stick or a SD Card?

Steven.

Disconnect the host from vcenter and do a fresh instal.Post installation add the host back to vc and add to cluster. The HA, drs, etc will be configured.

VC should be upgraded first.

If you have any VM's on local datastore do a storage vmotion and migrate to nas/SAN.. what ever in local will be wiped out during the installation. Vmotion all VM's and ensure you dont have any vm's on the host.

Once you done with the installation configure networking and storage ,mount the LUN'S back.

Cheers

JD has answered the questions

As you are not running the ESXi on either USB or SD Card, you will have to make a backup copy of all virtual machines in the local storage.

Hi JD,

- VC already upgraded to 5.1

- Is disconnect means "Remove" from VC ?? Will this affect other hosts in same cluster ??

- Already vmotion all VM to other host, anything need to set (like network, etc.) after add back to vCenter ?? Since network storage is using

- How about partition size ?? Do I need to modify or use default ??

- I want 2 partitions (local_OS and local_Data) like current setting, how to make it ??

Thanks

Hi JD,

It's the most important question, how about setting of "vSphere Distributed Switch" ??

Do I need to configure after add new host ??

Once you add the host back to VC, migrate the standard switch to DVswitch
