Proliant Management from ESXi

On psysical Servers, we install the HP System Managment software that allows us to check hardware etc.  We are trying to activate Write Caching on the Server remotely - we used to be able to do this with the HP Array Configuration Utility.

Is this still possible from ESXi, installing the software on a VM?  Or will we have to take down the Server and boot from CD to enable the write caching in the Array Configuration Utility?

This is not possible through a VM, because a VM does not have direct access to the physical hardware of the host.

There are two methods though to achieve what you are looking for:

1. a fully supported one: With the Offline ACU (that means taking down the host), see http://v-front.blogspot.com/2012/01/hard-to-find-hp-tools-offline-array.html

2. an unsupported one: by running the Linux version of hpacucli in the ESXi shell (without any host downtime!), see http://v-front.blogspot.com/2012/03/how-to-run-hp-online-acu-cli-for-linux.html
