Problems about X64 application and tech service mode on ESXi 4.0/4.1

Hello experts,

Nice to meet you. I encounter some problems as below on ESXi 4.0 and 4.1.

VMware ESXi 4.0 is one X86_64 kernel, but my tool compiled by gcc in Red Hart Enterprise Server 5.5 X86_64 can not run under Tech Support Mode. The error message is that "file not found" even though file is existent by "ls" command. However, the tool compiled by gcc in Fedora 11 i386 kernel again, and it works under Tech Support Mode.

Q1: Does VMware ESXi 4.0 not support 64-bit application?

I can use "Alt+F1" keys and "unsupported" password to enter hidden console of Tech Support Mode under ESXi 4.0, but can not do it under ESXi 4.1.

Q2: Does ESXi 4.1 also use "unsupported" password to entry Tech Support Mode? If not, how can I work on Tech Support Mode?

Please give me your professional comments.

Thanks!!

Best regards,

When you say ESXi 4.1 did you mean ESX4 Update 1 (208167)?

Hi Sir,

It is ESXi 4.1.0 (VMkernel Release Build 228591), not 208167.

Q1--ESXi 4.0 supports 64 bit applications

Q2- ESXi 4.0.1( It is not 4.1 ---4.1 is not yet released). You can login to the ESXi 4.0.1 in the same way that you used for ESX4.0.

Alt+f1 then type unsupported and you will get the promt for password. Type in the password and you are in the tech support mode

Hi Sir,

A1: My thinking is the same with you. I have coded one simple application printed "hello word!!" with gcc in Fedora 11 i386, and it can run in ESXi 4.0 Tech Support Mode as well. However, the same code compiled with gcc in Red Hat Server 5 X64 can not be run on ESXi 4.0, and then console prompts "file not found" error message. Have you compiled X64 application to run in it successfully? If yes, could you share me your experience or process?

A2: It is real ESXi 4.1.0, not 4.0.1. I have enabled "Local Tech Support" in troubleshooting options menu, and then see "ESXi 4.1 http://www.vmware.com (c) 2007-2010 VMware Inc." banner once press Alt+F1 keys. However, there is no response on screen even though I key in "unsupported" word, and I can not get Tech Support Mode as ESXi 4.0.

Best regards,

Hony
