Problem with memory allocation on an ESX4.1 Host

Hi,

we have got a little problem with the memory allocation of an ESXi 4.1 Server (build 348481).

The Server is an IBM HS22 Blade Server with a total amount of 70GB RAM installed (8x8GB + 2x2GB).

On the Configuration -> Memory tab, it shows the memory information as follows:

Total: 71668,2 MB

System: 1193,2MB

Virtual Machines: 70475,0MB

(see screenshot)

So far, this looks quite correct. Nevertheless, if you take a look at the ressource allocation tab, it says:

Total Memory 64261MB.

(see screenshot)

It will only let us allocate 64GB for virtual machines instead of 70GB.

Where does this gap come from and how can it be fixed?

For your information: This is a standalone ESX4.1 Host with the free hypervisor license.

According to the license information, it should allow a total amount of 256GB RAM, so this shouldn't be the problem.

Best Regards

Hi,

As mentioned by you the physical memory is configured as 8x8GB and 2x2GB

Most probably there are chances that host is only utilizing 8x8GB = 64GB as other modules are of different size, also check what is the difference between the memory modules.

Hi,

I think the diffenence in memory might gone to SWAP file for ESX host.

Kindly recollect wethere what swap size you have given at the time of installation.

Thanks n Regards
