Port-Channel ESXi 5.5 Standard on UCS C-Series

Greetings;

we are trying to setup resiliant connectivty to our new UCS C240 M3S by connecting two 10Gig VIC ports to two nexus switchs chassis using vPC ... the plan didnt go well, so we wanted to simpfy it and figure out why.

Objective Setup:

  • UCS will be connected to single switch via two 10G ports featuring Port-channel.

Configurations initiated:

  • Switch side is configured as port channel (tried LACP and ON mode both give same behavior).
  • on vShpere, vSwitch NIC teaming is set to "Route based on IP hash".

Results:

  • upon enabling the port channel from switch side, both vShpere Client and VMs running on host get disconnected.
  • while vSphere and VM disconnected, disabling on of the two interface of port channel on switch, connectivity is restored to both!

Any ideas what possibly might be the issue here ?

Hi!

If you are connecting to a single switch, it would be worth checking the maximum number of port channels supported, some entry level switches like Cisco 2960 only support 6 port channels, I was in a bit of a similar situation and the work around was not to use active/active config on esxi NIC teaming.
