Please Help/ Problems with VMware 5.5.0 update

Hi,

We are currently stuck on a problem involving the update from:

VMware ESXI 5.0.0 and 5.1.0 to 5.5.0 (both builds and installation disks including driver updates ) and we are currently experiencing a lot of problems.

The way we are trying to patch these systems are booting from either a:

CD

USB

Different systems react in different ways to the new patch, below is a list of the different servers we use and the outputs of what we are receiving when we are trying to update.

Model                     Current ESXI Level               Problem

Sun Blade X6250 -- Vm ware 5.0.0 / 5.1.0 --  Hangs at pre-splash configuration screen for 5.5.0, or halts on either libfcoe or the network card (qlogic system)

IBM x3455 AMD  -- Vm ware 5.0.0 / 5.1.0 --  Hangs at pre-splash configuration screen for 5.5.0 on booting up the Kernel, This system will also show the purple screen of death with the fault of "GP Exception 13 in world 32760"

If you have any idea what could be the problem please let us know, or any links to any helpful pages would be much appreciated

Thankyou

Problems with loading recent drivers on these old servers don't seem surprising at all, looking at the HCL: VMware Compatibility Guide: System Search

Sun Blade X6250 systems were only supported until ESX(i) 4.1.

And IBM System x3455 systems were only supported until ESX(i) 3.5.

You're not only "a bit out of date" here, you're lightyears away from supported hardware. It's almost a miracle if it worked fine with 5.0 and 5.1.

Hi,

IIRC then upgrading via CD/USB will not preserve your current drivers.

You might want to try updating from 5.0/5.1 to 5.5 via the cli method as described here:

good luck!
