Picking SCSI virtual device node for tape drive

When adding a SCSI device such as an internal SCSI tape drive to a particular Windows VM, does it matter what virtual device node I choose?

This Windows VM has two SCSI disks:

- SCSI (0:0) Hard disk 1

- SCSI (0:1) Hard disk 2

Do I put the tape drive on SCSI (0:2)?

Thanks

Hello,

Pick a secondary controller and the actual SCSI ID of the device. If it is a SCSI ID 4 use something like 1:4. This is the 'best practice'.

Thank you Texiwill. I have the tape drive attached to the onboard SCSI adapter and the two SCSI disks are connected to a separate SmartArray controller.

I want to check with you that I have setup the SCSI IDs correctly. If we start with the two vmdks that are attached to the Windows 2003 Server VM. The SCSI IDs of these disks are as I said (0:0) and (0:1). Is this correct? I mean they have nothing to do with the physical disks IDs, right?

Regarding the tape drive I just rebooted the server and I have attached a screenshot of the POST showing the tape drive and the two onboard HBAs. If I follow what you have said above then the tape drive should be assigned (0:3) when attached to the Windows VM, right?

Sorry if my SCSI lingo is incorrect.

Thanks

Just the ID should match, not the controller - so you should attach it to 1:3 in your VM.

Hi Matt,

So, for my learning benefit for this particular Windows VM it will mean that the two vmdks are connected to virtual SCSI controller (0) and the tape drive to virtual SCSI controller (1). Is this explanation accurate?

Thanks
