Performance chart couters come up blank

Hi All,

I have couple of questions that I am unable to understand.

FIRST >> I have close to 5 Virtual Centers in my environment; I wanted to get the info from the disk counter in the performance charts of the Host. As per article

https://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-5600 in stats level 2; read couters should be available.

Disk kernel read latency is supported in stats level 2; however when I try to view previous day’s data for Kernel read latency it comes up as blank. The real time data works fine

Because of this issue I am unable to check historical data for disk latency as it returns blank data. The VC is running stats level 2

Second >>> If I go under storage view and highlight performance tab; when I change the view to performance and check previous days data; all the fields come up as no data available. It is because I am running stats level at 2? If yes then can you please mention an article that suggests to increase it.

SIOC is not enabled in my environment so I can  understand that those graphs are missing but what about others.

Can you please suggest on how to proceed.

Thanks

The document you linked is quite old and applies to vSphere 4.x. Starting with 5.0 VMware moved quite a few storage IO related counters to a higher statistics level (for example per-VM/VMDK IOPS).

You can use the Level Mapping Utility provided by VMware to check which counter belongs to which statistics level and re-configure them accordingly:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=200953...

This article also describes how to use the Level Mapping Utility for per-VM counters, you should be able to apply it to the counters you need as well:

Hi MK,

Thanks for the reply

For my second Question -- the stats level need to be increased -- I checked this from the web client

So here the only way to see the charts is by increasing the stats level or do we have a workaround for this?

stats to be increased for the DS charts.png

Also for any latency counter if I check the previous days data it is not showing it. This is right across any latency counter.

How do I go about checking disk latency for a specific Datastore/LUN for last month

Thanks

Please read the links I posted thoroughly. The Level Mapping Utility allows you to manipulate the statistics level association of all vSphere related performance metrics for every object.

Just use the utility with the respective counters you need.

Apart from that you can also increase the vCenter statistics level as a whole, which will collect a lot more counters than necessary though.

Hi MK,

I have the disk latency charts for the Datastore but how do I configure vcenter alarms.

For example in the charts if for a Datastore --- the charts shows that the latency was above 1000 ms -- is there a way i can configure alarms for it?

I have close to 150 Datastores -- it is not possible manually to check the latency for all of them

Thanks
