Performance-Settings for Lab-environment

Hello,

i am having a lab-environment with the following hardware:

- HP 8200 ESXI-hosts with Intel Gigabit MT Dual port-cards

- HP 1810-24G Gigabit-switch with LACP

- QNAP 869PRO

I am looking for a small! step by step guide to setup op for maximum performance through iscsi and NFS with this kind of configuration.

Until now i ahve some difference experience with this setup.

Open questions

1) What to choose : NFS or Iscsi (until now NFS performance better

2) Related to question 1 --> iscsi supports VAAI, what to use? NFS or iscsi

3) Use LACP with QNAP and HP1810-24G switch or not?

4) What would be the maximum performance for a VM with this kind of configuration?

5) Recommed to use a Dvswitch for networking and why (or why not?)

Until now i did have the following results :

Read : 60 Mbps

Write : 98 Mbps

Strange thing :

Another Vm on SAME hosts , same network

Read : 30 Mbps

Write : 60 Mbps

I am hoping for some suggestions!

Thx

1) The protocols can both before within 5% of each other for 99% of scenarios.  Ask your storage vendor what they prefer.  I'm gonna guess QNAP probably prefers NFS.

2) NFS and iSCSI can both do VAAI depending on your storage...QNAP doesn't support NFS VAAI...

3) Sure.

4) No way to predict - its primarily limited by the performance of your storage (which is primarily limited by the disk and RAID configuration)....what can your array do?

5) doesn't matter for performance.

How are you testing performance?
