Performance Best Practices: to V or not to V

We have a resource intensive modeling application. We are going to buy a new 24 core server to run it on. My question is, should I install VMWare and add the modeling server as a vm? Or just install the OS directly on the machine? I'm not sure if there is an advantage to installing VMWare.

If your software can work with a lot of cores (more than 😎 than the answer is run on the physical system.

If is limited to 4-8 cores, but can run with other nodes, create multiple VMs.
