Patching Host with VMs using local storage

Hi Experts,

We have ESX 6.5 and have VMs that are using local storage, not vSAN, what's the good and safe way of patching and updating ESX host. Just concern about not being able to migrate VMs storage to another host.

Appreciate any comments or help.

Thanks,

Hubble

Hi,

You may still be able to migrate the VMs to another host if there is enough disk space there.

Check this:

https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/com.vmware.vsphere.vcenterhost.doc/GUID-561681D9-6511-...

If you can't SvMotion them to a remote host with storage capacity then you will need to power off all the VMs and then do the upgrade/updates.

VUM is always the recommended way for patching & upgrading the ESXi hosts. VUM consists of few steps by which we can patch our ESXi hosts smoothly without any hassle & also can avoid the downtime if we have additional resources available in the cluster. In this post we will see on how we can patch the ESXi hosts using vSphere Update Manager.
