PVSCSI performance issue

We are testing moving an SAP ASE database from Physical to VM (vSphere 5.5, RHEL 6.5 guest OS and HDS SAN). The performance for most operations matched when using the LSI controllers. But as soon as the controllers were changed to the recommended PVSCSI, the performance started degrading. Disk service times show an increase at the OS level. Some of the results get so worse that the timings get doubled. The performance matches the physical when we again, revert to LSI controllers.

I have read that PVSCSI were meant for high IO earlier and not recommended for low IO.. but that was until vSphere 4.1 an earlier I think. The later vSphere versions are supposed to be supporting all kind of IO patterns with PVSCSI and are more generic.

Is there any particular configuration that we need to do at the vSphere/ESXi/PVSCSI level?
