PSOD not create vmkernel-zdump file

Question:

Yesterday one of customers 32 ESX 4.0.0 build 244038 did a PSOD.

I wanted to examine the vmkernel-zdump- file and create a supportcase with vmware but i didn't find the file anywhere.

I followed the KB articles

KB Article: 1009082

KB Article: 1000328

and KB Article: 1006796

Everything seems fine and correct but i cant find the file.

Is it possible that ESX dont write any file and under what circumstance does ESX dont write any log file.

Have 32 HP BL490c G6 with local SSD disk where ESX is installed on.

Regards /BZ

Hi BZ,

Do you know what was happening at the time of the crash? We have a very similar environment to the one that you have outlined and we have had 3 PSOD since October 7 2010. At the time of our incidents, we were install a VMworld Best of show backup product on 2 occasions and the 3rd incident was out of the blue so know one will admit to doing anything. We are leaning towards a hardware fault but no

The only difference is we are running ESXi 4.1 260247. And we have a virtual connect/Flex 10 network layer.

I cant help you with finding the file, sorry, but if you run this command you should be able to see if the host has a dump location setup and active

esxcfg-dumppart --server --username root -l

All i need to do is work out how to see this location and determine if the zdump file exists. Any ideas?

I have a call open with HP that has been escalated to VMware (SR# 1599368741) but all that they have said is to setup the scratch partition and hope it happens again. Not the best position to be in....

HP said to run the Offline Hardware diagnostics, which come back clean. So all i can do now is wait. If i get any feedback from anyone i'll update the post.
