PCIe USB 3.1 card

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a PCIe ASMedia 3.1 USB card, on Amazon (Link), that I installed on a Dell R710 chassis running vSphere 6.  My goal is to connect a 4TB WD external HDD that will be used as a datastore for backups.  ESXi seems to find the card because when looking at pass through devices and SSH > lspci i get the following output:

0000:04:00.0 Serial bus controller: ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1142 USB 3.1 Host Controller

When I plug in the HDD however it does not light up like it's active.  If I use one of the built in server ports the HDD lights up but I'm not sure how to add it as a datastore.  Is it possible to get this working with the 3.1 USB card I bought?

Is the device added to Pass-Thru for a VM?

No, I didn't set is as passthrough because I was hoping that it would be possible to use it native to the ESXi host and create a datastore.  Is this an option?
