P2V conversion for Windows server 2003.

Hi Team,

I'm checking the feasibilty to convert the below windows 2003 server.

Server role:- DC server(domain controller).and radius service(radius server) installed.

We are trying to depromote DC from this server and then proceed for P2V(only with Radius server).

We want to clarify whether this approach will work or not.

Please clarify.

It should work, however if it is officially supported or not is another thing.

Just make sure you select the correct Storage adapter, such as the LSI Logic, instead of the SAS or Paravirtual options; you also may want to select HW version 8 or 9.

That should work just fine, if you are using latest version of VMware Converter it will select all the correct settings for you, but you can tweak it.  After you have successfully virtualised just remember unwanted sotware i.e. server verdor specific software like Dell OpenManage tools or HP tools and remove old hardware like physical which are still present but hidden see this KB article VMware KB: Networking Error: IP address already assigned to another adapter

Also very important, this will de-activate the license as there has been significant hardware, and you will be required to active again, you can do online activation, provided you have network connection.  If that fails, just do phone activation, it is very straight, call you local number as shown on the screen and type in the installation key and you will be provided with activation key.  The whole process is automated.

Should work, and good catch on demoting the DC before you do a P2V.

P2V of domain controllers especially on 2003 is a bad bad idea.
