Orphaned Redo files

Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help me figure this out Smiley Happy

We have a an ESXi 5.0 host that seems to have some open snapshots that are not listed in the Snapshot manager.

When the VM is running I can see the following file:

DC1-000001-delta.vmdk         DC1_1-ctk.vmdk
DC1-000001.vmdk               DC1_1-flat.vmdk
DC1-8a434a20.hlog             DC1_1.vmdk
DC1-8a434a20.vswp             DC1_1.vmdk-ctk.REDO_S57e3H
DC1-ctk.vmdk                  DC1_1.vmdk-delta.REDO_S57e3H
DC1-flat.vmdk                 DC1_1.vmdk.REDO_S57e3H
DC1.nvram                     vmmcores-1.gz
DC1.vmdk                      vmware-1.log
DC1.vmdk-ctk.REDO_TEp3Ji      vmware-2.log
DC1.vmdk-delta.REDO_TEp3Ji    vmware-3.log
DC1.vmdk.REDO_TEp3Ji          vmware-4.log
DC1.vmsd                      vmware-5.log
DC1.vmx                       vmware-6.log
DC1.vmxf                      vmware.log
DC1_1-000001-delta.vmdk       vmx-DC1-2319665696-1.vswp
DC1_1-000001.vmdk

As you can see there are Redo files and delta files which means I have an open snapshot. However it is not listed in sanpshot manager and running "vim-cmd vmsvc/snapshot.get " does not list any snapshots.

I have tried creating a new sanpshot and then deleting it, but that did not delete the open snapshots.

At the moment, if I power off the VM and restart it, it revers back to it's state before the hidden snapshot was taken, 4 days ago (BTW - it was taken by backup exec's 2010 Vmware option ). So basically, the server looses 4 days of data Smiley Sad Smiley Sad

How can I commit the open snapshot, merge the data and get rid of the Delta/Redo files?

I appreciate your help!!!!

Welcome to the Community,

did you click the "Delete" button or "Delete All" after taking the new snapshot? "Delete" only deletes a snapshot that's visible and selected in the Snapshot Manager, whereas "Delete All" deletes all snapshots regardless of whether they show up in the Snapshot Manager.

Hi Andre,

I tried both ☺ but still same problem.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

To see what's going on, can you please:

  • shut down the VM
  • power on the VM
  • create a new snapshot
  • run "Delete All" from the Snapshot Manager
  • shut down the VM

Then download the vmware.log file from the VM's folder on the datastore and attach it to your next reply post.
