Operation System on esxi5 and Files on Raid

Hello,

are that possible to installation Win Server 2008 as VM (direct connect Harddisk on Motherboard), but the datas are on a Raid Array from the same PC?

The data would be managed by the VM Windows server.

Should not be a problem, as long as ESXi recognize a RAID controller and is able to see connected disks you can either attached RAW device to VM with Win2008 or create VMFS and add second VMDK disk to virtual machine

Hello arturka, thanks for your helps.

That's my problem, the ESXi does not support my controllers. Must ESXi needs to support the controller? I was hoping to avoid that problem over the Windows server. For the Win Server i have drivers.

yep, ESXi must support your controller.

you have few chooses now:

• replace controller for model which ESXi can support it
• change a hypervisor (use XenServer or Hyper-V) and verify if controller is supported by mentioned Hypervisors
• or change a concept from bare mettal hypervisor to software virtualization
  • install Linux on your server (I'm pretty sure that controller will be supported by newest distro)
  • install virtualization software (Vmware workstation, VMware player, oracle virtual box)
  • create a VM and install Win2008 on it

VMware Workstation is intended for test environments, so that I can transpose a permanent solution?

BTW, what is RAID controler model which you have a problem with ? maybe it is possible to add ESXi drivers to ESXI5 iso.

ESXi is actually created for 24 hours 7 days applications, Such as a server.

Can I operate permanently with VMware Workstation important applications, such as a Windows server. Quite often there are bugs or limitations that prevent a sustainable productive use.

well,  I wouldn't use Workstation in production environment, maybe for single low utilized server as a temporary solution but definitely not as a main virtualization platform

BTW. what is your RAID controller model ? maybe it is possible to download drivers and inject them into ESXi5 iso or maybe it is supported by ESXi4 ?

My Raid Controller is the 3Ware 9590SE, on ESXi 4 is the Controller Supported. But i want use the newest Version from ESXi.

I Testing the 3. Option.

• I install on Local Machine (Harddisk directly connect on Mainboard) a Linux Distru. like Ubuntu. (Must Support my Raid Controller).
• With VMware virtualize the W2K8 R2 64 Bit. (Only 40 Members, in the VM are not Data Files, only the operation System)
• On the Raid Array are only Data Files.

I hope i can realize this scenario or do you have a better idea?

I recommend stay with ESXi4, just apply newest patches and you should be good

Why i must have anytime these probs.

Try to download ESXi 4.1 U1 (not ESX), download Update Pack 2 for ESXi4 and update  your server, don't forget about request a free license for ESXi4 because trial period is only for 60 days
