Offline migration from one ESXi5 host to another fails

Hi,

I have a problem with offline machine migrations between 2 sites (1 cluster).  The process fails at around 95% with the error 'Could Not Complete Network Copy for file)

We have 20 hosts located in a blade center chassis.  18 of them are ESX4 hosts.  The offline migration between those works fine.  Now I have installed 2 servers as ESXi5 hosts.  When I try to perform an offline migration of a machine (host + datastore) it fails.

The network & storage settings are equal to those of the ESX4 hosts on the blade server level.

I have googled ,but didn't really find a solution for my issue.  DNS seems to be working alright as I can resolve the hosts fine and the hosts can resolve my vcenter.

Note that I'm not using vMotion for that since the machine I'm trying to migrate is powered off.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Erik

Greets,

Try migrating just the VM to the new host first. If that works, then try moving the datastore.

Make sure things like jumbo frames, DNS, gateways are all identical.

Make sure any weirdness like mappings to ISOs, NFS paths, iscsi paths, raw connections, snap shots etc aren't stopping you.

Are the VMFS stores the same or does the 5 host have the new format?

Hi,

Well I forgot to mention that I actually tried that.  Moving in 2 steps works fine.

Settings are the same, both hosts are compliant (host profile)

Both VMFS datastores are version 5.

Okay then that is odd then. :smileymischief:

If both datastores are VMFS 5, including the 4.1 hosts, did you do an upgrade on those datastores or start with a clean format?

The reason I ask is that apparently there are quite a few features that get left out if you upgrade VMFS instead of formatting new:

I'm not sure that would have anything to do with the fact that it works for you when you move things seperately, but it could be a lead.

Other than network traffic problems I'm not sure where else to look.

Well this still doesn't work.  It can have something to do with the version 7.3.4 on Ontap we run which is not compatible with ESXi5.

We have an upgrade planned and I'll see if the problem persists.

The VMware SR# I have openend , didn't help much.
