Hi

See below links

VCAT 3.1 (vCloud Director 5.1): http://download3.vmware.com/vcat/vcat31_documentation_center/#page/Architecting%2520a%2520vCloud/3a%...

vCenter Servers per vCloud Director = 25 (Number of vCenter servers that can be managed by a single vCloud instance.)

VMware KB: vCloud Director 5.1 Configuration Maximums

vCenter Servers = 25

VCAT 3.1.2: VMware vCloud Architecture Toolkit 3.1.2 PDF package (zip) (~22MB)

vSphere / vCloud Director 5.5

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r55/vsphere-55-configuration-maximums.pdf - page 9

vCenter Servers = 20

Hi

Yes based on documentation, but haven't tried this before.

1 vCD cell supports many vCenter servers and multiple vCenter servers attached to  vCD can be in linked mode.

vSphere limits still apply.

e.g. linked mode for vCenter Servers is supported for up to 10 vCenter servers even though vCD can attach up to 25 vCenter servers. Therefore, in this case, only 10 of the vCenter servers can be set to linked mode.

All vCenter Servers should be in same site to avoid potential latency.

Below is the vCD scaling for your reference.

vCD-scaling.jpg

Here's some explanation from this book: http://www.amazon.com/VMware-Private-Computing-vCloud-Director/dp/1118180585

vCenter

vCloud Director v5.1 can manage up to 25 vCenter installations from a single vCloud Director instance.

This is how vCloud Director can manage up to 30,000 VMs from a single installation.

It essentially manages, consolidates, and abstracts resources managed by vCenter.

NOTE

Although a single vCloud installation can manage 25 vCenter Server instances, it can’t achieve the same total scale as 25 x vCenter Server installations because vCloud Director has its own limits that in some cases are reached before those of vSphere and vCenter. These are documented in the vSphere 5 Configuration Maximums document available here: https://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r51/vsphere-51-configuration-maximums.pdf

From now on, we use vCloud Director Server instance and cell interchangeably.

There is also a recommendation on how to determine the number of cell instances required on the document section Sizing for Number of Cell Instances.
