Not able to connect to ESX 4 server : "vmware-vpxa: unrecognized service"

Hello,

ESX 4.0 server is installed on a Dell r710 with dual CPUs. The installation goes through w/o a hitch. However, vSphere client is not able to connect to it afterwards. Try to restart the vpxa service, it shows:

# service vmware-vpxa restart

vmware-vpxa: unrecognized service

I have installed another ESX 4.0 on r710 with a single CPU package and vpxa can be restarted w/o any issue:

# service vmware-vpxa restart

Stopping vmware-vpxa:

Starting vmware-vpxa:

What may cause the vmware-vpxa service not recognized in a dual CPU system?

Thanks, - Martin

restart mgmt-vmware service and wait for 2 - 3 minutes and then try connecting from virtual center.

if you can not please post /var/log/vmware/hostd.log

The problem was solved by re-installing vpxa service.

- Copy vpx-upgrade-esx-7-linux-162856 and vpx-upgrade-esx-7-linux-162856.sig files from C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\VirtualCenter Server\upgrade directory on the vCenter server.

- Do 'sh vpx-upgrade-esx-7-linux-162856; and then 'service vmware-vpxa start'

vSphere GUI is able to connect to server afterwards. It's still not clear why vpx agent failed to install in the first place.
