No compatible network adapter found

Hi all,

Lately we moved to new server hardware and I found out that the existing ESXi 4.1.0 installer is not working any longer.

Using VMware-VMvisor-Installer-4.1.0.update1-348481.x86_64.iso I get to the point where I can accept the license agreement and then it fails on the erorr as stated in this KB article: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=102995...

Server hardware is: HP Proliant DL380p G8 - 32GB Memory - 2x Intel Xeon CPU E5-2690 @ 2.9Ghz

Network card 1: 629135-B21 HP Ethernet 1GB 4P 331FLR NIC

Network card 2: 593722-B21 NC365T 4ports Ethernet server adapter

I ended up downloading a new ESXi ISO: 4.1_U2_Jun_2012_ESXi_HD-USB-SDImgeInstlr_Z7550-00800.iso

(This one installs VMKernel Release Build 348481)

Now I can do the ESXi installation but upon completion of the installation and after rebooting the server, I get following error displayed:
No compatible network adapter found. Please consult the product's Hardware Compatibility Guide (HCG) for a list of supported adapters.

Pressing F2 and trying to enable the management network is not possible: Operation on the management network interface failed

I'm not sure whether I'm still using the wrong installer for the hardware or...

We have a deadline opening the new office (which is on the other site of the world) so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Mario

P.S. FYI  - The complete setup is 2 servers and 1x EMC VNXe 3150 storage device in a redundant setup

Have you tried to get an ESXi image directly from HP?

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c03329963&lang=en&cc=us&taskI...

they offer ESXi isos with additional drivers inside. Might be the easiest way to install the drivers

Hi,

Yes I did - the ISO I mentioned was the one that came from HP:

Item #:1
Product #:HPVM06
Product name:VMware vSphere Hypervisor 4 (ESXi) and Updates
Version:4.0 and Updates
Software specification:4.1 U2 Jun 2012 ESXi HD-USB-SDImgeInstlr (Z7550-00800.iso)
Special instructions:
Download filename:4.1_U2_Jun_2012_ESXi_HD-USB-SDImgeInstlr_Z7550-00800.iso

This is the latest one HP is offering and is still resulting in the error I mentioned...

You can try

https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM08

I don't see the difference since I have no HP account here. But this Version is ESXi4.1U2 (VM08) while your version is just VM06. If this doesn't work we probably have to load the driver manually

as an addition if it doesn't work with the other image

https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/downloads

find your drivers here ( http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=io&productid=14748&deviceCat...     , should be igb version 3.2.10 , please verify it by yourself )

and follow this guide here

Smiley Happy good luck

Hi Fabian,

I'm now downloading the HPVM8 image and will try that one first. It is about 200MB larger then the one I initially downloaded from HP so there's a difference.

The remote office (servers) is in Tokyo and I'm in Belgium so it will take me an hour to have some results...
Will get back to you.

Thanks in advance - this is good stuff !

Cheers,

Mario

Hi Fabian,

The image is for ESX and not for ESXi.

I just noticed when I saw the graphical interface showing up...

Cheers,

Mario

Hi Fabian,

I have found yet another  version via the download link you posted (4.1.0 Update 3).

I'm now trying with that one. If not okay, I will indeed have to install the drivers separately.

Cheers,

Mario
