Newb with basic Q for ESXi IP

My networking experience has been pretty much plug and play.

While I understand the concept of a DHCP server, I've just assumed it lived on the router in a peer to peer network I have here at my desk, since I've always just plugged in computers I'm working on to my switch and the network shows up for them (windows).

I've installed ESXi and it defaults to an IP address of  169.254.0.1 [subnet 255.255.0.0] for the management network. I assigned a static address of  192.168.0.100 [subnet 255.255.255.0] which is within the range my workstation is using.

Either way I can't ping the new server.

I'm certain I'm missing a conceptual piece in understanding this.

I've copied an IPconfig result from my workstation if it might help.

TIA

Ben

Actually DHCP should work with the ESXi host as it works with your PC!? The IP address you get (169.254.0.1) is an ABIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) address which the hosts uses if no DHCP offer is received. Please double check the host has connection to the router (Check link lights, replace the network cable, ...) and the router has available IP addresses in its DHCP range.

Thanks.

Connections are good.

If I plug the same cable into a Win7 box I'm working on it picks up the network just fine.

FWIW, the server is built with a supermicro X8Si6-F mobo with Intel nics.

Are teh NICs getting picked up by ESXi?

If they are, it should work fine and you should check your DHCP server logs.

I show 2 NICs -- vmnic0 and vmnic1 -- each recognizes when the cable is attached to it with "connected". [D]etails shows the MAC Address, Connection status (connected), and Used by (None).

The router I typically use is kind of odd-ball in the sense that it's a Verizon 5 user wireless hotspot for mobile broadband (I live in a very rural area). There isn't much in terms of logs. I replaced it with a D-Link router which picked up my Win7 desktop w/ no problem, but there isn't anything relative to the ESXi machine.

I was browsing the ESXi logs and came across:  [ 'esxcfg-init-eesx' warning] Unable to restore "VMKernal DNS". Invalid operation for ESXi systems. This operation only works on ESX Classic
