Hello, I am new to VM Ware and this community.  If I want to learn ESXi, where is the best place to start?  Can I install ESXi on my Dell Precision desktop to get more familiar with ESXi?

    Welcome to the Community,

depending on the CPU and RAM in your system, the easiest way would be to install ESXi as a virtual machine in VMware Workstation.

Thank you.  Would I do the same thing if I was installing on a laptop with the following specs?

  • Intel Core i3-2370M 2.4GHz
  • 4GB Memory

According to Intel the required CPU features (VT-x, EPT) should be available in the I3 CPU. Take a look at the BIOS and check whether "VT-x" as well as the "Execute Disable Bit" are both enabled. If you need to change one of these settings you'll need to power cycle the system after saving the BIOS, a simple reboot may not be sufficient. The 4GB RAM should at least allow you to create and run one virtual ESXi host (with 2GB).
