New ESXi 4 host in existing cluster - hyperthreading question

Hi,

I have a question hopefully someone can answer. I currently have a 3 node ESXi 4 Update 1 cluster. The 3 current machines all have hyperthreading enabled. We just purchased a 4th host to add to the cluster but hyperthreading isn't supported on the server. The CPU is from the same series as the other 3 machines. Will the cluster function properly having 3 hosts with hyperthreading enabled and 1 without? Or will I need to disable hyperthreading on the other 3 machines?

Thanks.

There should not be any problems with the cluster as long as the CPUs are compatible - you will just have less cpu resources on the new box as there will be fewer logical CPUs that the vCPU can be scheduled to -

Hi,

Yes it will run fine, I miss configured the bios hyperthread setting on one of my hosts in a cluster the past and I didn't even notice it until days later.

The most important element is that the CPU model has the exact same features, otherwise you would have to mask any functions that are not on the other cores.

Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) would be interesting for your. http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003212
