    Hi,

As usual im a newbie to vmware..but not to networking.

Im setting up a lab environment with ESXi4.1 and some Windows 2008 guest OS (for now).

I have only vSwitch0 configured which is on a static IP 192.168.1.11 - received from my DHCP server (Cisco router).

    I created a new VM - windows 2008 server and selected vmxnet3.

Started the Guest OS/ server.... and no DHCP offer received.

so then i though I would use static..

I can ping the management address but thats all nothing in my network.

    vSwitch0 has default setting

      VMPG  - connected to vmnic0

        1 x VM - connected to vmnic0

      VMKernel Port

        vmk0:192.168.1.11 connected to vmic0

The host receives DHCP fine and can ping the DHCP server, just not my Guest.

Is there anything that I need to do.

    thx in advance.

    Hi,

Welcome to the VMware Communities Forum.

Did you create a portgroup connected to the vSwitch and connect the virtual machine's network adapter to the portgroup?

    Regards, Robert

Also check VLAN IDs on the port group.

    It was created already.

But i did create a new vswitch1 and new PG but couldnt work out how to attach the VM to it... How to do this?

Back to original issue.. below is the picture of my config.

can you provide ESXi port configuration of your physical switch?

im assuming that part is working as the esxi host can get dhcp and ping the gateway etc.

I think the poster is above is wanting to confirm that the switch isn't configured to accept only a single MAC address on the particular port that the ESXi host is connected to.

Its small business switch - the port cant be configured for that ... you cant even putty / SSH to it.

    Web based management.

Standard out of the box config.

Ill try plugging in a hub and see what results i get anyway.

Just to make sure it's no OS based issue. Did you allow pings on the Windows 2008 firewall?

Windows Firewall >> Advanced Security >> Inbound Rules >> File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-IN)
