Networking Troubleshooting

Hi All,

I have a client with some intermittent networking issues. Sometimes when they vMotion machines between their two hosts, they loose network connectivity and must be rebooted. Some also loose connecitivity randomly and require reboot. I have had a few from fresh boot not be able to talk either.

On all occasions they can ping the host IP that they currently reside on which suggests issues with the vSwitch. What's the best way to troubleshoot these problems?

Have you monitor vmkping result between two hosts?

Double check the port settings on the physical switch. Make sure port security is disabled and "spanning-tree portfast" is configured (depending on your network setup). Can you provide some details (maybe a screen shot) of the virtual network setup and the configuration of the physical switch ports?

So port security is disabled, just looking at this spanning-tree configuration now. FYI it's a Netgear GS724T v3.

The network config is very simple across both hosts:

2 Physical Network cards (vmnic0, vmnic2) associated to vSwitch0.

56 Ports

Promiscuous Mode: Reject

MAC Address Changes: Accept

Forged Trasmits: Accept

No Traffic Shaping

Load Balancing: Port ID

Network Failure Detection: Link Status only

Notify Switches: Yes

Failback: Yes

Active Adapters: vmnic0, vmnic2
