Need advise : VMs "reconfigure virtual machine" approx 10 minutes

Hi, I need some advise.

I have approx 40 VMs spread across 6x hosts (ESXi 5.1.0 : 1065491).

I cannot remember what I did recently (2 to 3 weeks ago) but :

- there was no host reboot, no updates

- I did a SQL log shrink as my vCenter got a connection error (SQL Log full)

- reboot vCenter (after shrinking SQL logs)

Only the past week or so, I realised that there were 6 VMs that were always in the vCenter recent task "reconfigure virtual machine".

The "reconfigure virtual machine" task seem to happen every 10 minutes and reaches 100% almost immediately.

There were no details on the tasks.

The VMs are on spread across several ESXi hosts, running Windows Server 2008/2012.

I actually found the culprit after a few tries. There are several issues/causes for this but it leads any (one) of the following :

1. Dell EQL smart copy : the smart copy job is stuck. The issue is fixed in the Dell EQL VSM 3.5.2 where unsuccessful snapshots are removed and re-queued.

2. Trend Micro Deep Security : Just re-sync the vCenter and clear/reset the error warnings for all computers

3. Acronis Backup job stuck or failure which causes the VM "aware" snapshot "services" to start and then stop. All I did was to stop the backup job as Acronis does not have a easy to understand error log.

Please kindly update if it helps.

if you have vm level backup configure, disable the backup for one of the machines and check.

I do not have any Backups for any of these VMs (most are testing or UAT VMs). Only one VM (AD) was having Equallogic snapshot as backup.

I disabled the snapshot manager from Dell EQL but the reconfigure is still occuring for all the affected VMS.

Hi,

What are you reconfigured in your VM? can you attach the vmware.log file of an affected VM. (Can you specify the date and time of the reconfigure task).

Julien

I am not configuring anything nor did I configure anything (at least not directly on the VMs).

Only changes made that I remember was to shrink the database and rebooting the vCenter.

Where do I get the VMware.log ?

It is located inside the vm folder. Simply browse your datastore, go into your VM's folder and you will see it.

Julien.
