NIC of ESX

If the ESX host's NIC fails, can we access that host VM's.

Thanks,

Prashant

It is going to depnd on how many NICs the ESXi host has and how the networking is configured -  but in short yes communication to the VMs can still happen -

depends how you have designed your environment, if you have followed vmware best practices then you would have dedicated nics and vswitch for vms and yes they will be communicating.

Say for example if we have only one NIC.

Unless you are a magician, then no without network connectivity you cannot access the system. Smiley Wink

If you have just one single nic for your whole ESXi server of course your VMs will also lose the connection if this NIC goes down.

In this case you need to bring this nic up again first to get access to your VMs.

If you have a single NIC and if fails,  your host will have to be accessed via a remote console on standing in front of a KVM within your Data Center.

As for the guests, without the host having an active network connection, the guests will be down as well.  Getting to them would require you getting your network card back online.

One final note is also that when your single NIC fails then naturally all external connections are lost, but the VMs inside could still communicate with each other, since the virtual switch does not break when the physical NIC gets disconnected.
