Current storage environement is Fiber Channel to a NetApp controller.  I am looking to migrate to NFS now that the we have 10Gb to the ESX hosts.

    Here is the setup:

Two NetApp 3140 in an active\active configuration.  The NetApp controllers have 10Gb NIC cards installed.  Both connections on controller1 connect to a 6509 #1.  Both connections on controller2 connect to the 6509 #2.  No VSS between the switches.  Each NetApp controller has a vif with for the storage vlan.

ESX Servers have a CNA card installed.  One connection goes to Nexus 1 and the other connection goes to Nexus 2.  Both Nexus's connect to both 6509.

Each ESX host has one vmk kernel port created on the storage vlan.

    Couple questions:

Do I need alias IP address on the NetApp controllers?

Do I need multiple vmk kernel ports on the ESX hosts?

    Thanks

    Couple questions:

Do I need alias IP address on the NetApp  controllers?

Personally, I set up storage on a dedicated network  - with dedicated NICs allocated to storage on the ESX.

this network is also non routable.

so the IP on the NetApp is on the same subnet as the VMKernel port that I create for it - and neither has Default Gateways specified.

this means all Storage traffic remains isolated on that network (so no performance interruption and no security weaknesses)

Do I need multiple vmk kernel ports on the ESX hosts?

I create a dedicated one for storage (as stated above)

Your VMs do not need IP access to the NFS store to function.
