Hi,
So are you using vSwitch0 for virtual machine traffic and vSwitch2 for ESXi Management traffic?
Steven.
Hi skan070,
I using
vmnic1-- vSwitch0 for Management
and vmnic0-- vSwitch2 for vm
Thank you,
chonwa
Hi Chonwa, What I think is, as VMware vNICs aren't actually physical interfaces, as long as the vNICs are connected to virtual machine, mii-tool might think they are still up (VMware layer). Sorry for not giving you a clear answer, haven't used mii-tool before. Regards, Steven.
Hi skan070,
Thanks for your reply
It's mean network interface in VM never down, if I just unplug cable ?
nic on VM will down in ONLY case I disconnect vmnic (VM>edit setting) right?
Actually, I want to test bonding interface (eth0,eth1) on O/S level (not teaming on ESX)
when I unplug physical interface for eth0, but eth0 not down !!
Thank you,
Chonwa
Hi Chonwa,
It's just my guess, not quite sure how mii-tool works!
Do you have another virtual machine with different OS? It will pay off to check if it's mii-tool that cannot detect the ethernet down!?
Regards,
Steven.
OK Steven,
Another one VM is Window server 2008 R2
In the same problem I unplug network cable but on VM it still UP (up but can't ping to GW)
Thank you,
Chonwa
Hi Chonwa,
Hmm? So after you unplug a physical cable, virtual machine still thinks the ethernet is still up?
I just did a test, not with a physical cable but logically, the virtual machine lost the network connectivity right away.
I will take a look into it more.

Steven,
I ever test with logic (vm>edit setting), status on VM is down normally.
Why no anyone found this problem?
Thanks,
Chonwa
Hi,
I'm also facing the same problem. By any chance, did you find the answer ?
I think after you disconnect the Physical NIC as there are no NICs connected to virtual switch its behaving like a private isolated network. The switch can still pass the traffic between the VMs connected to it if they are on the same vlan.
That means there is no way VM can detect physical link status ?
