Moving virtual DC

Hi,

I've got two esxi servers and I'd like to move a virtual DC from the old one to the new one.  What is the best option for doing this?

Do the two hosts share storage and are they managed by the same vCenter, if so just do a vMotion, if the answer to those two questions are as follows

Share Storage No

Switch off the DC

unregister Guest

make a copy of the machine folder and physically move it to the new host.

once there re-register the guest in vCenter on new host.

No vCenter

Switch off the DC

unregister Guest from ESXi

make a copy of the machine folder and physically move it to the new host.

once there re-register the guest on ESXi on new host.

one benefit of this is that you will not have to purchase any third party software to carry out the tasks.

If your goal is to migrate VM from one host to another, you can put into use Veeam Backup and Replication, or more specifically, its “Quick Migration” functionality.

With Veeam Quick Migration you’ll be able to migrate promptly one or more VM between ESX(i) hosts, datastores or both. It allows migration of VMs in any state with a minimum disruption to business operations and end user access to services.

This feature is available in Veeam Backup and Replication Free Edition.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

You can move with VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client is free and easy.

I moved a DC 2008 from a ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.1 in 30 minutes, you need turn off la VM to move it.
