I have a 10+ host ENT Plus setup running the cisco 1000v for the virtual switching.
I have sorted out how to get virtual machine networking from the 1000v over to the VDS and it seems to work well.
The question i have now is how do i move or migrate my VMK adapters?
Do i:
1. create new VMK virtual adapters on my new VDS and put one adapter in the VMotion VLAN with a new unique ip and the other in the management vlan with a unique ip.
Then, delete the VMK adapters and port groups on the 1000v and then re-ip the newly created adapters to the original ips.
or
2. Create new Vmotion and MGMT VMK port groups (with the same VLANs as the 1000v). Do i use the vmk port group migration via the "Migrate Existing Adapters" function. I know i can migrate virtual adapters all day long between a VSS and a VDS but im not sure if i can do this between VMK adapters that are attached to the 1000v. I am almost certain you can migrate them from the 1000v port group to the VDS.....but what i am afriad if is i wont be able o migrate them back as a failover option if things dont go as planned.
The second option seems like the correct option considering the management ip of the hosts is attached to vcenter and i wouldnt want to attach them twice. I just want to make sure i can faill the VMK adapters back to the 1000v if i need to do so.
Further......if i do option 2, will i be able to vmotion from hosts between the 2 switches? Once the VMK adapter is migrated from one switch to the other i assume they cant talk to each other for vmotion to happen even if they are in the same vlan?
Hopefully this makes sense. It is confusing to try to explain via web forums.
