Migration SQL server 2008 to SQL server standard, what's the best ?

Good evening,

I need help for a sql server migration.

We  have already a vcenter 5.1 in production installed in Windows 2008 R2  x64 with SQL Server 2008 express. Ours datas increase and ourODBC can't  respond to our use. We need to migrate to SQL server 2008 Express into  SQ server 2008 standard.

I have a problematic with Vmware softwares installed (SSO, Update Manager).

I have two choices :

  • Installing a new server 2008 server R2 with SQL Server 2008 Standard and import datas beetwen current server to our new one.
  • Migrating in our current server SQL Server Express to Standard.

What's the best solution ?

Regards,

You must check both odbc 32bit and 64bit. If not mistake that um using 64bit

  • Installing a new server 2008 server R2 with SQL Server 2008 Standard and import datas beetwen current server to our new one.

You not able to import directly the data unless you are going to do fresh install/fresh configuration.

  • Migrating in our current server SQL Server Express to Standard.

Yes, Migrating your SQL Server Express to Standard is a good idea, You just need to install the SQL Express Management Tools then backup your DB/Export out. Then proceed with install new SQL Server Standard instance, Then restore/import your DB and just point back your ODBC DSN to new DB.

Just my one cents

Hi,

I install SQL 2008 R2 SP1 and "restore" vcenter database. No problem at all. Just check parameter during databases restoration.

I have one problem concerning vcenter update manager, I don't know where the odbc is? ... weird problem.
