Migrate 2008 Domain Controller

we do need to move a 2008 AD DC to a new ESXi host and different storage.

my Options are

a) using VEEAM replication with VSS Option enabled. replicate DC to new Host, turn off DC and power on replicated DC

b) turn off the DC, replacate to new host and power it on

in my opinion both Options should be good to go. i just Need to be sure, not to run into a USN issue and having the DC in a healthy state after Migration.

Thank You!

If the domain controller hostname change is not a problem, here is my recommended method is :

1. create a new virtual machine with Windows Server 2008 or higher, join this VM to domain;

2. promote this new VM to an additional domain controller;

3. migrate all FSMO from the old DC to the new DC;

4. demote the old DC.

This way you will get the new DC in VM and without the risk of USN journal issue.

i dont follow.

is this stand alone server?

donwload image from datastore and copy to new datastore and start DC there

is this a cluster and vsphere environment? then you can just svmotion to other host and storage

Thank you for your assistance.

this is how we did it:

- Power down the VM with AD

- replicate VM to new host and datastore with VEEAM replication

- power up VM

so far no Problems, all seems to be fine!

Next time you can use the so called Planned Failover functionality available in VB&R version 8. It does exactly the same steps in automatic fashion - powers down VM, transfers final changes and powers replica up.

Cheers.
