Microsoft NLB on Virtual machines

Hi Experts,

I am very strange issue with microsoft NLB on virtual machines.

I have build two new virtual machines from scratch and installed Windows server 2008 R2.

Installed NLB manager on servers and build a NLB successfully with two nodes. It is in unicast mode.

Each node has got one NIC card and having static IPs.

There is cluster IP NLB.

Both the VMs are going out of network suddenly.(stops pinging)

When I migrate(Vmotion) the server from one ESX to other ESX in cluster it starts pinging as the migration process reaches 78% completion in task bar.

I am configuring NLB for first time on Vmware. Please can you guys explain whether NLB works fine or supported on Virtual machine.

Please share any documents or links which has ste by step process for configuring NLB on Vmware.

Appreciate your help.please share your experience.

Thanks

Abhi

If I recall correctly, when a vMotion happens a rarp is sent across the network so the switches know where the MAC and IP are (new ESX host location, new wire/port).  So it may work for a while, and then breaks again afterwards.

using google, I found a couple more specific documents for you:

Sample Configuration - Network Load Balancing (NLB) UNICAST Mode Configuration

http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1006778

(and for completeness)

Sample Configuration - Network Load Balancing (NLB) Multicast Mode Configuration
