Merge Clusters, datastore storage is NOT shared.

Hi,

Anyone who can get me going ...

I'm tasked to merge 2 clusters using Vsphere Client 5.0.0. Actually it is moving VMs from 1 cluster into another. Unfortunately the storage (datastore) is not shared amongst the 2 clusters.

What options do I have ?

Can I attach a datastore to 2 clusters at the same time ? So I can 'vmotion' the VMs from ESX hosts ? Online ?

Other options are welcome too.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Community - Yes you can attach a datastore to two different clusters at the same time and vmotion the VMs - the option you will have then is to either keep the storage attached or storage vmotion to move the VMs storage the other storage

Unfortunately the storage (datastore) is not shared amongst the 2 clusters.

If you are using 5.1, then you can perform a XVmotion of live vms across hosts without shared storage and it can only be done from Web management

Hi, if you want to merge both of the cluster in single thn  i would suggest to follow the bellow steps to achieve the goal,

lets say you have two cluster cluster-a and cluster-b

1.uncheck the host monitoring option from  HA from cluster-b.

2. disconnect hosts from vcentre one by one  or drug down hosts from cluster-b to root datacentre so that host shows as standalone server.

3. connect all shared data store which were in cluster-b hosts  to cluster-A hosts.

4. now attached those standalone esxi hosts in cluster-a (when you will attached those esxi hosts it will automatically configure HA and make all running VM HA protected )

5. done

Above suggestion is not tested however whenever i add hosts in cluster it always attach in cluster like the same way. . If you want to go through above steps  please do it by your own risk.
