Memory Usage after Installation

Hello,

i dedected a strange thing after installing a new ESX 4.0 host.

After i connected with vSphere Client to the host and looking in the overview i see that the host uses 754 MB Memory of 4GB in total.

Whats this? 18 percent memory usage without any virtual machine running and nothing to do?

I mean to remember that this isnt the same under ESX 3.5.

Hi excelsi,

This is the memory used by the service console of the ESX server, you can change the memory reservation for it (ESX -> Configuration->Memory->Properties), but I wouldn't recommend decreasing it, in fact I always prefer to put it as a max. I also don't see why you would run ESX on a 4GB ram server, is this a test server or production?

its only for testing...why not with 4gb? Im not a datacenter

Im only wondering about this high amount of memory especially for "simple" service console like you said.

No problem ... and it makes perfect sense now, I mean the ESX being for testing. My lab is running on 4GB blades as well. In production I'm just used to monster servers stuffed with huge amount of memory, that's why I was asking

Virtualization has "some" overhead: vmkernel, console, and each single VM.
