Memory Allocation

Hi All,

Is it okay if I allocate all 4gb Ram for 1vm? I have ibm server with xeon and 4gb ram running on esxi.

Although you can, it is not a good idea since your physical server has only 4GB, and the ESXi itself requires memory, depending of the version something about 2GB at minimum, see: Minimum system requirements for installing ESXi/ESX (1003661) | VMware KB

Thank you for your quick response. I have 2 gb ram for each slot, the server has 4 dimm slot. Is it okay if I add two 4gb RAM. So it will be 2 + 2 + 4 + 4..

Will that be okay? This does not affect anything?

Hello,

you can do this.

I personally would recommend to reserve 4 GB for the ESXi. So you can upgrade your VM up to 8 GB without problems.

Patrick
