When migrating a VM from one ESX 4 server to another I get the error:

Currently connected device 'Serial port 1' sues backing'/dev/ttyS0', which is not accessible.

Of course I was able to uncheck the Connected under "Device Status" and migrate with no problems.  However this server uses HA and auto failover and I fear that this VM will not be able to start on the other host.

I am sure we have migrated this VM in the past without any issues.  What can I do to get the serial port to migrate without needing to be disconnected?

If this guest has a connection to a serial port on it's ESX Host, you cannot migrate it without breaking that serial connnection.  So, as far as I know, there is nothing you can do.  I don't beieve using VMDirect Path will even fix you issue.
