MacOS 10.6 Server && VMware Fusion 3.0 - Migration to ESXi

Moring All!

I've got a MacOS 10.6 Server running inside VMware Fusion 3.0. Thank you very much to the guys at VMware for getting the whole boot-loader working!

Anyone ever migrated one of these beasts from Fusion 3.0 into ESXi 4??? If so ... how'd it go??? I'm looking to do this so I can expose a couple LUN's from my SAN to the MacOS Server and run Xsan and Final Cut Server - without the hardware investment (hey, Apple is the ones that discontued the production of the Xserve - a nice rack mounted server too).

I may not be 100% correct but I believe I read before that this goes against the EULA for MacOS Server. I believe it states that it has to run on Apple hardware. I could be wrong though.

I understand. And, you are accurate.

How does Apple know I'm not using a pair of Mac Pro's and bootcamp as a VMware server??? Which, I have acutally done before Smiley Happy

Seriously though, migrating my ESXi servers to Mac Pro hardware is an option, if I can move my existing OS 10.6 Server VM's into ESXi!

They don't, but see the next response....

Seriously though, migrating my ESXi servers to Mac Pro hardware is an option, if I can move my existing OS 10.6 Server VM's into ESXi!VMware does not currently support OSX Server as a guest on an ESX(i) host because VMware does not support ESX(i) on Apple hardware.

While the wording of the EULA appears to allow you to run a OSX Server as a VMware Server, Workstastion, Player or ESX(i) guest so long as it's running on Apple hardware, at the moment, VMware's non-Mac products do not have verification feature to check for Apple hosts. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) So although you might be able to get it to work, VMware does not support it. (And realizing the difference between "it works" and "it's supported".) How hard it is to implement such a verification, I do not know and VMware tends not to comment on future features. So we don't know if VMware will ever support Apple hardware for ESX(i) hosts. (And also, whether to support Workstation/Player in Boot Camp to run OSX Server guests.) Reports of success with the non-server versions of OSX infer that it's should be possible to run OSX Server on non-Apple machines. But being unsupported, only you can decide if you're willing to do that, especially if these are production machines.

I'd be interested to know what the apple server is doing that couldn't be done by a supported OS on ESX/ESXi... The list of things that have to be done on apple server platforms is very short. With a little digging/thinking about it, you can usually make the list even shorter in fact...

Why am I not surprised that it's 100% mac OS ONLY software that's requiring apple hardware ONLY... To have apple lock you in so hard hurts in so many ways...

At one time I was a fan of apple hardware/products (yes, I drank the 'cool-aid)... Then I woke up to how the real world works... Now I partake of the VMware Stout...
